The Indonesian Pindad Komodo 4×4 light armoured vehicle has been fitted with a 120 mm smoothbore version of the Brazilian Ares Recoil Mortar System (RMS) for trials purposes.

The four-door protected cab positioned in the middle of the Komodo is retained, and the 120 mm RMS is mounted on a power-operated turntable on the flatbed. It can also be fitted with an 81 mm mortar barrel, which could be used for training purposes as it has a shorter range and fires lower-cost ammunition than its 120 mm counterpart.

The 120 mm RMS has a fully automatic powered operating laying system with manual back up, and is integrated with a mortar fire control system (MFCS) that is embedded with an inertial navigation system (INS) and an onboard ballistic computer. This is meant to enable the system to come into action quicker, carry out a fire mission, and then redeploy.

If required, it can be integrated with a higher echelon command-and-control system and be linked to mortar fire controllers/forward observation officers (MFC/FOO) or a fire direction centre (FDC).

The 120 mm mortar’s range depends on the projectile/charge combination, but firing an unassisted high-explosive (HE) mortar bomb it is typically 7,000 m.

The number of mortar bombs carried depends on the size of the platform, but could be up to 70. Its maximum rate of fire is up to 16 rds/min, and it is designed to come into action and fire its first round within about 60 seconds and then rapidly move to another firing position.

The 120 mm RMS weighs 1,200 kg and can also be installed on larger 6×6 or 8×8 armoured fighting vehicles (AFVs) and tracked AFVs, in which case it would be typically mounted in the rear of the platform and fired through open roof hatches.

The weapon has a maximum range of 7km with a missile diameter of 80mm and weighs in at 2.5kg.

Hong explained that Indonesia was the only country the weapon had been exported to although it has also been procured by the South Korean MoD. The company has an indigenous facility in Jakarta.

By 2015 Hong said that the delivery of the 12 missiles had been completed; this took place over the course of two years with three batches of four missiles being received by the Indonesian Air Force in stages.

In the summer of 2017 the air force fired two of the missiles and according to Hong the service said the firings were successful.

SINGAPORE: Malaysia is seeking Russia’s help to maintain the aircraft bought from Moscow, Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad said today.

“As you know we have bought a number of Russian aircraft and I think we need to learn more on how to maintain and repair the aircraft,” he said during his bilateral meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin on the sidelines of the 33rd Asean Summit.

However, further details were not available as the press were asked to leave.

Malaysia is known to have Russian defence equipment.

Malaysia’s Ministry of Defence has been operating Sukhoi Su-30MKM and MiG-29 fighter jets. It has been reported before that there were issues with regard to maintenance and services.

Its minister Mohamad Sabu had also said before that only four of the 18 Sukhoi jets were able to fly well, while the remaining were under repair.

Meanwhile, Malaysia and Russia hope to increase trade between the two countries.

“Relations between Russia and Malaysia have been developing and we have been doing quite well,” said Putin, adding that both countries had seen a significant increase in trade in the first eight months, at over 60%.

“A lot more can still be done and I think a lot more could have been done during the previous years. I am very glad to meet you and to have chance to talk… to have an opportunity with you,” he told Mahathir via a translator.

Meanwhile, Mahathir said the meeting would be a platform to look into the relations with Russia and hoped to increase trade with the country.

“Our trade is quite good but we can do better,” he said.

Last year, Malaysia and Russia celebrated their 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations.

The ELM-2084 is a mobile S-Band Multi-Mission Radar (MMR) Family implementing an advanced 3D Active Electronically Steered Array (AESA) supporting modular and scalable architecture. (photo : QPVN)

The MMR family supports Artillery Weapon Location & Air Defense operational missions and provides optimal solutions for short, medium and long range missions. The latest QPVN television reported that Israel's modern air defense weapons have officially appeared in combat ready, in the Vietnam.

In the report, "S300 Missile Training Training - PMU1" and documentary "People's Army of Vietnam - Some pictures of training exercises in 2017", multi-purpose radar ELM-2084 is on the service and PKKQ troops have officially appeared in the state of combat.

The presence of the ELM-2084 multi-purpose radar in a state of combat allows us to be assured that PK-KQ is fully operational, ready to take on the task of managing the airspace, "Not for the country to be defeated by airborne situations."

Accompanying the ELM-2288ER, the deployment of modern ELM-2084 multi-functional radar complexes marks the stepping stone of the sky-clearing network for Vietnam's air defense forces.

The EL/M-2084 was developed by the ELTA Company of the IAI Group (Israel) since 2002 in response to the threat of short range rockets and rocket attacks by Islamic militant groups. like Hezbollah, Hamas.

EL/M-2084 was tested during the 2008-2009 Gaza War as an early warning radar, detecting Hamas artillery fire and joining the Israeli Army's 2010 mission.

As a fire-control radar, the ELM-2084 first tested success on April 7, 2011 as it assisted the Iron Dome system to intercept a jet-fired missile launching from the Gaza Strip towards Israeli territory. .

Throughout the Gaza Strip, the ELM-2084 has proven its superior performance. Currently, ELM-2084 is popular in many countries, such as India, Singapore, Azerbaijan, Canada.

Even the Czech Republic, a well known nation in the field of radar technology with the famous products such as VERA, RL-3DM Reunion ... also ordered 8 sets of radars of this type. Since its launch, the IAI has achieved record sales of 100 ELM-2084 radars with a total value of $ 1.9 billion.

Excellent tactical features

According to the manufacturer's introduction, the ELM-2084 is a modern multi-functional S-wave radar that can perform a wide variety of tasks including: aerial view; anti-aircraft missile defense or intercept missiles; detecting artillery, mortars, rocket artillery and locating their battlefields.

With its modular design, AESA, ELM-2084 has the ability to resist electronic pressure as well as simultaneously detect and track dozens of hundreds of flying targets with high resolution.

The ELM-2084 is primarily a radio spotlight cum-bin for advanced Israeli missile/interceptor missile complexes such as BARAK-8, SPYDER-MR, Iron Dome, and David's Sling.

Radar has the farthest distance to 410 km of aerial targets, and up to 100 km (or even 250 km) in locating the firing/firing of enemy artillery/missiles, providing full-featured three-parameter target intelligence for computer systems for automatic combat command.

For enemy positioning/launching of rocket/missile mode discovery distance: up to 100 km (or up to 250 km). Scanning angle azimuth 120o; Angle: 50o. Accuracy: 0.25% of target error (CEP); Targets processed at the same time: 200 goals/min.

Currently, few radar-based radar-based missiles have the capability to perform well, such as the ELM-2084, which is comparable to the US Marine Corps, which owns a multi-radar radar. AN/TPS-80 Ground/Aerial Direction.

Radar ELM-2084 in deployment (photo: IAI)

The unique advantages of the ELM-2084

Target remote detection, automatic transmission of three parameters (distance, azimuth, elevation) to the command headquarters integrated. Perform multiple tasks at the same time, anti-aircraft missile defense or intercept missiles; detecting artillery, mortars, rocket artillery and locating their battlefields.

Quick update, close to the active trajectory, depicts the real-time battlefield panorama for commanders and fire units, engraving of small flying objects, stealth, action at super low altitude.

Calculate the explosion points of artillery, mortars, missiles against the enemy. The area of the array antenna can expand according to task and configuration. Operate effectively in high-tech electronic warfare environments, dense interferences. Remote control, deployment time, quick recall and maneuverability on any terrain.

Compact design can be transported on a variety of vehicles.

The perfect match for Vietnam's artillery reconnaissance radar

Like the ELM-2288ER radar that the Vietnam Defense has equipped, ELM-2084 multigrade radar (MMR) radar has also been developed by Israel's IAI ELTA.

If it is exploited well, it will definitely be an extremely powerful weapon, playing a key role not only in the airspace, but also in support of artillery combat command in high tech war conditions.

The ELM-2084MMR can be used for accurate positioning of enemy artillery fire brigades, including guided artillery.

In fact, the ELM-2084 was created to meet the needs of Israeli artillery forces in dealing with short range ballistic missiles by Islamic militant groups firing on Israeli territory.

The ELM-2084 was first used by the Israeli Artillery Reconnaissance Unit 611 and proved to be effective as an artillery radar.

Currently, our artillery radar role belongs to the relatively long-running SNAR-10 and the ELM-2084MMR emerges as a potential substitute candidate for many specifications: distance Detection, target number tracking, accuracy ...

It can be said that, with the ELM-2084 radar, the PKKQ troops have a guard, an "eye" for protecting the skies of the country, "not to leave the Fatherland in the air. case " .

In addition, we can rely on the ability of the ELM-2084 radar to continue to be assigned artillery radar missions in the Navy Artillery or Naval Forces, Accurate navigation for sharp arrows such as Accular, and Extra.

Australia names OPV project as Arafura class (graphic : Aus DoD)

In a momentous day for Australia’s national shipbuilding endeavor, construction has commenced on the Navy’s new Offshore Patrol Vessels at Osborne in South Australia.

The Minister for Defence, the Hon Christopher Pyne MP, said the multi-billion dollar project will see 12 OPVs delivered.

The OPVs will have an important role protecting our borders and will provide greater range and endurance than the existing patrol boat fleet.

“The OPV project is expected to create up to 1000 direct and indirect jobs,” said Minister Pyne.

The first two vessels will be built at Osborne before Civmec starts constructing the next 10 at Henderson in Western Australia.

Minister Pyne said ASC Shipbuilding will use its expertise gained through the Air Warfare Destroyer program to build the first two OPVs.

“These new vessels are being built in Australian facilities, with Australian steel, and by Australian workers.”

“Only a year ago we announced Lürssen was the preferred tenderer.”

“It’s a fantastic achievement to start construction on time and on budget and I’d like to thank everyone involved in the project.”

The Government’s $90 billion dollar continuous naval shipbuilding program is the largest and most ambitious capital investment ever undertaken in Australia.

“This investment is about more than building ships, submarines and shipyards because it will establish an Australian sovereign capability.”

“The continuous shipbuilding program will act as a catalyst for industry growth which will secure thousands of Australian jobs for decades.”

“This is truly a national endeavour, with the Federal Government laying the foundations for an Australia-wide sovereign naval shipbuilding enterprise.”

The OPVs will be built using Australian steel, creating Australian jobs. The steel used today in construction is from the same batch cut by the Prime Minister in Henderson just a few weeks ago, demonstrating the Government’s commitment to the naval shipbuilding program and Australian jobs.

“Our commitment ends the boom-bust cycle which has afflicted the Australian naval shipbuilding and sustainment industry in the past.”

The Minister for Finance and the Public Service, Mathias Cormann said that ASC’s shipbuilding capacity has continued to grow from strength to strength since the Government initiated the Air Warfare Destroyer reform program in 2014.

“Over the past few years ASC has demonstrated its capacity to deliver high quality vessels for the Royal Australian Navy.

“ASC’s workforce has already delivered two state-of-the-art Air Warfare Destroyers, with a third due next year. They are also exceeding their performance benchmarks in support of our Collins Class submarine fleet.”

“We look forward to ASC continuing their strong work on the first two Offshore Patrol Vessels that begin construction today.”

Minister for Defence, the Hon Christopher Pyne MP, and Minister for Defence Industry, the Hon Steven Ciobo MP, today announced the selection of the General Atomics MQ-9 Reaper variant as the system which best meets the capability requirements for Australia’s first armed remotely piloted aircraft system.

Minister Pyne said the medium altitude long endurance aircraft can be integrated within the Australian Defence Force (ADF) and would be fully interoperable with our allies.

“These new aircraft will provide enhanced firepower and intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance support to a range of missions,” Minister Pyne said.

“Medium altitude, long endurance, remotely piloted aircraft have a far greater range than smaller remotely piloted aircraft and can continuously observe an area of interest for much longer than manned reconnaissance aircraft.”

The aircraft will be used to watch and protect ADF and coalition land forces, and provide reconnaissance support for search and rescue, humanitarian assistance and disaster relief operations.

“Remotely piloted aircraft allow military commanders to make more informed decisions faster whilst providing the option to conduct strike and reconnaissance operations without risking the safety of aircrew.”

“The aircraft will be operated under the same laws of armed conflict, international human rights law and rules of engagement as manned aircraft”, Minister Pyne said.

Minister Ciobo said the project provides opportunities for Australian industry with associated infrastructure development and sustainment activities.

“General Atomics, as the original equipment manufacturer of the Reaper, has partnered with a large number of Australian companies who provide a range of innovative sensor, communication, manufacturing and life-cycle support capabilities,” Minister Ciobo said.

“This is a great opportunity for Australian industry and demonstrates Australia’s world-class capability to support cutting-edge technologies.”

The Government will now request pricing and availability data from the United States on Reaper variants to support future decision-making on the acquisition.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) – At least 13 countries have expressed their interest in purchasing the Russian S-400 Triumph surface-to-air missile systems instead of US equipment despite the likelihood of provoking Washington’s sanctions, media reported citing people with first-hand knowledge of a US intelligence assessment.

Algeria, Egypt, Iraq, Morocco, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Vietnam were among the countries that had already engaged in talks on buying the Russian missile systems, the CNBC broadcaster reported on Wednesday.

Washington expected that several countries would yield to the US pressure and abandon their plans to purchase the Russian equipment, the outlet added.

Another source noted that S-400 had been more powerful, in terms of capability, than the US most capable Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system.

Sanctions over the purchase of the Russian military equipment could be triggered under the US Countering America's Adversaries Through Sanctions Act, which came into force in 2017 and is set to punish Moscow for it alleged meddling in the US 2016 presidential election, something vehemently denied by Russia.

In September, Washington imposed sanctions on China over its purchase of Su-35 fighter jets in 2017 and S-400 system-related equipment in 2018.

Apart from China, India and Turkey have also reached agreements on the purchases of the missile systems from Russia. Turkey’s plans have, particularly, been a point of concern for the United States since Ankara is Washington’s NATO ally.

The Saudi authorities have also been openly engaged in talks with Russia on the missile system purchase.

S-400 is the next-generation mobile missile system which can carry three different types of missiles capable of destroying a variety of aerial targets at a short-to-extremely-long range, from reconnaissance aircraft to ballistic missiles.
