The H225M and CH-47F possess better lift and reach capabilities, and will enable the RSAF to meet the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF)'s lift requirements more efficiently with fewer helicopters and less manpower.

The acquisition of the H225M and CH-47F will ensure that the RSAF continues to effectively meet the SAF's lift requirements for a wide spectrum of operations, including Search and Rescue (SAR), Aeromedical Evacuation (AME) and Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) operations. The replacement aircraft were selected after a rigorous evaluation process.

Hopes for light artillery expansion

French defence manufacturer Nexter expects further orders for its LG1 light artillery gun in Indonesia.

The company has already delivered 20 to the Indonesian Marines. LG1 fires 105mm rounds and is marinised so that it can be used in a naval environment.

A spokesperson from Nexter said that the Indonesian Army may be interested in buying the gun as well because it is a lightweight system weighing just 1,550kg that can be easily deployed by medium helicopters like the Bell 212 and SA 330 Puma.

LG1 can fire 12 rounds per minute and can be brought into action in 30 seconds if an optional inertial navigation system is included that allows the gun to be brought into action faster because it removes the need for a geographic team to calculate the location and surrounding terrain before LG1 can be used.

He said the army already has 105mm guns but that these are old and will need to be replaced. LG1 can be crewed by a few as three soldiers and has a Top-Lite ballistic computer.

The Indonesian Army has already upgraded its 155mm and rocket artillery forces as it has recently taken delivery of two batteries of Caesar 155mm self-propelled 6x6 wheeled artillery guns in 2015 totalling 36 guns plus one for training. They also received 36 ASTROS 6x6 self-propelled rocket artillery systems from Brazilian manufacturer Avibras.

Improvement in range

Nexter is also offering improved ammunition that can extend the range from about 11km using exsiting M1 rounds to more than 15km with Nexter Munitions’ hollow base and base bleed projectiles.

Nexter has already sold the LG1 to Thailand, which has 18 systems and to Singapore and the company expects to sell more in the South East Asia region. Other LG1 customers include Belgium, Canada and Colombia.

Four injured as Air Force chopper crashes in Palawan

Four passengers were injured after an Air Force chopper, carrying 12 persons including Philippine National Police officials, crashed in a ricefield in Puerto Princesa, Palawan, on Tuesday afternoon due to a mechanical problem.

The passengers were PNP Directorate for Operations head Chief Supt. Camilo Cascolan, Region 4B director Chief Supt Wilben Mayor, Deputy DO Chief Supt. Nestor Bergonia, and Chief Supt. Amador Corpus from the Directorial Staff.

In a phone interview with reporters, Mayor said they conducted an inspection for the expected visit of Chief Justice Ma. Lourdes Sereno in the area for the scheduled ASEAN Chief of Justices Conference to be held on November 10.

He said those who were not injured are now back at their hotel.

Initial information from Armed Forces of the Philippines Western Command spokesperson Lt. Col. Cherryl Tindog said Air Force Sokol 926 left for a reconnaissance or probing flight at around 2:00 p.m.

“It experienced a mechanical problem and crash landed at vicinity of Sitio Sabang, Bgy Cabayugan, Puerto Princesa City. The passengers are reportedly safe with minor injuries,” she said.

"Apat po yung dinala natin sa hospital para tingnan," she said.

The crash happened around 2:42 to 2:45 p.m. Tindog said WesCom already sent an air ambulance and another aircraft to the incident area.

She said they cannot determine yet the extent of the damage of the chopper.

A press statement from Philippine Air Force said the helicopter experienced one engine inoperative malfunction that prompted the pilot, 1Lt Gino Glenn Solano, to perform emergency landing.

Grounded

Solano said they landed on a rice field since it was the nearest and safest area, as it was far from a populated area.

However, the ricefield’s uneven surface led the aircraft to tilt to the right as it touched down, damaging its main rotor blades.??

Aside from Solano, also on board were Major Michael R Yraolo (Co-pilot), Sgt Dunhill R Guanzon (Crew), and A1C Mark Phol T Masangkay (Helicopter Mechanic).

"Such incident will immediately undergo investigation per standard operating procedure. The PAF will have no further comments until such investigation is concluded," the PAF statement read.

The six other Sokol helicopter of PAF were grounded while investigation is ongoing.

New Russian ASW Ship Goes for Export

Developed by the Almaz Central Marine Design Bureau, the Project 23420 small antisubmarine warfare (ASW) ship armed with Paket-NK system will be offered to Southeast Asian navies, the bureau’s officials told Mil.Today.

"Actually, this project is an offer for foreign customers rather than Russian Navy", explained Dmitry Tsygankov, head of the marketing and scientific technical information department at the Almaz design bureau.

According to him, designers regard Southeast Asia as key market but are open for cooperation with any customers worldwide.

Andrey Frolov, an expert in marine weapons and chief editor of The Arms Exports magazine, says the Russian Navy presently has no need of such ships.

Project 23420 was designed to replace Parchim class corvette (photo : Kaskus Militer)

"We have a type variety of corvettes, we call them differently but the essence is the same. It is excessive to breed another project now", shared Frolov his viewpoint.

Also, the expert did not rule out the license transfer for building of series of such ships to a potential foreign customer.

According to the project, the ship displaces 1,300 tons, is 75 meters long and 13 meters wide. Maximum speed is expected to be 30 knots.

The corvette will be armed with a gun mount, either 76-mm AK-176MA or 30-mm AK-306, turret mount with ZM-47 Gibka antiaircraft missiles, two 12.7 machineguns, and either the Paket-E/NK antisubmarine torpedo system or the RPK-8E antisubmarine missile аnd depth bomb system. An unmanned aerial vehicle will be stationed on the deck.

Currently, the Russian Navy operates Project 20380 corvettes equipped with similar Paket-NK antisubmarine system. This kind of weapon is also mounted on the Project 22350 frigates being under construction.

Australia has been assigned responsibilities for certain F-35 component repairs. (photo : Lockheed Martin)

CANBERRA (Xinhua) -- Australia has been chosen to provide maintenance, repair, overhaul and upgrade for the components of the Joint Strike Fighter in the Asia Pacific Region, announced Minister for Defence Industry Christopher Pyne on Tuesday.

Pyne said this contract will create and sustain hundreds if not thousands of jobs, bringing about 100 million Australian dollars (77 million U.S. dollars) to the economy.

The announcement was made after Pyne paid a visit to Washington and met with key Pentagon officials to push Australia's case.

The United States had announced that Australia is one of four countries which will be a regional hub for the maintenance of the Joint Strike Fighter.

The Australian government has made defence industry a major part of its economic plan, expecting it to promote the development of the country's high skilled, advanced manufacturing sector.

Partner countries in the Joint Strike Fighter program were asked to bid in 11 component categories, Australia was successful in 10.

The Joint Strike Fighter program has been lucrative for Australia to date, with Australian industry already achieving more than 800 million Australian dollars (616 million U.S. dollars) in contracts from F-35 design and production work.

Pyne expected that being part of the Joint Strike Fighter program will open the door for the F-35 Global Support supply chain and cements Australia as a key strategic partner in the global F-35 enterprise.

The New Zealand Defence Force will soon have access to cutting-edge communication systems, providing a complete picture of the battlefield and allowing information to be shared quickly.

Defence Minister Gerry Brownlee says the government has approved the purchase of a battle management system, provided by Danish firm Systematic.

“The new system will enable NZDF to gain a complete picture of the situation on the ground and share information quickly,” Mr Brownlee says.

“The SitaWare Battle Management System and integration consultancy will cost $11 million over three years.

“The purchase is part of a programme to digitise the Army to provide modern command, communication, battle management and surveillance capabilities,” Mr Brownlee says.

“The SitaWare system will link headquarters, units, vehicles and individuals, allowing Army to get a full picture of the battlefield and share information quickly.

“It will also enable the Defence Force to operate seamlessly with partners when deployed in a coalition.”

Currently, the Army relies mostly on manual processes to receive and disseminate information.

“This system won’t change what the Army does, but it will provide advanced tools and techniques to support our soldiers, such as ‘blue force tracking’ and a common operating picture of troop movements,” Mr Brownlee says.

The SitaWare system has been trialled extensively by the Army for several years, and is supported by local company Eagle Technology Group.

The purchase is one of a number of projects worth more than $100 million, which will deliver modern communications to the Army units most often deployed by the government.

These projects form the first tranche of the broader Network Enabled Army programme, allowing the Army to take advantage of new technologies to enable better planning and decision making.

MANILA, Philippines – President Rodrigo Duterte's visit to Japan resulted in additional loans that will give the Philippine Coast Guard more boats to boost the country's security and border patrol capabilities, particularly in the porous borders of the southern Philippines.

The coast guard is getting a total of 27 boats from Japan through loans and grants acquired since the administration of former president Benigno Aquino III.

Finance Secretary Carlos Dominguez III said the boats will be used to run after criminals and threat groups in the country's southern borders such as narco-traffickers, smugglers, and the Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG).

“Our government’s acquisition of these patrol vessels and high-speed boats would give a big boost to our Coast Guard’s capabilities in securing our waters,” said Dominguez.

Dominguez was the signatory to a 16.5-billion yen loan (P6.8 billion) from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), covering the purchase of two 94-meter largescale patrol ships for the coast guard. The loan is among 5 agreements signed during Duterte's Japan trip.

The loan was acquired at a concessional interest rate of between 0.01% and 0.10% and payable in 40 years, inclusive of a 10-year grace period).

The two largescale patrol ships are on top of 10 40-meter patrol vessels, the first of which was commissioned in October and has been readied for deployment to the West Philippine Sea (South China Sea). Both projects are under the Maritime Safety Capability Improvement Project (MSCIP) with Japan.

An additional grant of 600-million yen (P280 million) will also give the coast guard one 20-meter high-speed vessel ang 14 units of 11-meter high speed boats, according to the finance department.

President Rodrigo Duterte said he will closely cooperate with neighboring Malaysia and Indonesia to secure shared borders. Duterte met with Indonesian President Joko Widodo in September, and will meet Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak when he visits Malaysia from November 9 to 10.

Rampant criminality in the country's southern borders have discouraged businessmen and investors, including Indonesian suppliers that the finance department said have stopped deliveries of coal to power-generation plants in Mindanao following the abduction of their Indonesian crewmembers.

Airbus Defence and Space has signed GigaSat to its channel partner programme for Skynet services. GigaSat will be offering Skynet services as part of their mobile and fly-away communications portfolio, to Indonesian Defence Forces operating within the Asia Pacific Region.

Airbus Defence and Space is working with service providers to develop new partnerships to deliver highly resilient Skynet military satellite communication services to Asia Pacific region, following the move of its Skynet 5A satellite from 6° East to 95° East to provide global X-band and UHF coverage in this region.

Steve Mills, Head of Global Sales and Marketing for Skynet 5 at Airbus Defence and Space, said: "We have worked with GigaSat already for a number of years working with their extensive satellite terminal portfolio. This new partnership will enable GigaSat to offer Skynet services to their already strong terminal customer base; the services will primarily be using the newly relocated Skynet 5A satellite and enable users to operate in both the US and Asia regions."

Tom Cross, Business Unit Director for Ultra Electronics, GigaSat commented: "GigaSat has a long history of providing integrated hardware solutions to our global satcom customers. This partnership with Airbus will for the first time allow us to also provide X-band and UHF Skynet services, and we are particularly excited about bringing this capability to the Indonesian market, where we have enjoyed strong customer relationships for many years."

Airbus Defence and Space completed the move of the Skynet 5A to 95° East over the Asia Pacific region in September 2015. The relocation was initiated to extend the Skynet constellation’s coverage and services from 178 West to 163 East, including the Indian Ocean and Western Pacific region. The Skynet network now offers global military coverage, expanding core service reach for the UK military and augmenting coalition capabilities in the region.

Airbus Defence and Space owns and operates the hardened Skynet X-band satellite constellation of eight satellites and the ground network to provide all Beyond Line of Sight (BLOS) communications to the UK Ministry of Defence. The contract also allows other NATO and allied governments such as members of the five-eyes community (besides UK, the USA, Australia, New Zealand and Canada) to use the Skynet system to augment their existing services.

After ordering three submarines from South Korea, Indonesia plans to buy three more as part of the country’s minimum essential force (MEF) program.

The Committee for Defense Industry Policy (KKIP) said Indonesia had yet to decide the producer of the submarines.

“The first, second and third submarines were developed in South Korea,” KKIP corporation and marketing department head Rear Adm (ret) Yussuf Sollichien told The Jakarta Post in Jakarta on Thursday.

He said Indonesia had yet to decide whether it would purchase the three submarines from South Korea.

Indonesia has ordered three types of 209/1400 Chang Bogo- Class diesel attack submarines from Korean defense company Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine engineering (DSME).

The Navy currently operates two German-made submarines, the KRI Cakra (401) and KRI Nenggala (402), which were built in the 1980s. The submarines are due to be decommissioned in 2020.

Besides three new submarines, Indonesia also plans to purchase guided missile frigates and fast missile boats.

“Indonesia doesn’t want to downgrade the operational and technical requirements, so we will buy from foreign countries. However, we need the transfer of technology [TOT] as that is mandated by the law,” Yussuf said.

Pesawat tanpa awak UAV

Pesawat tempur KFX/IFX
