Marder 1 fitted with Hitfact 105mm turret (photo : Jane's)
Rheinmetall Landsysteme of Germany has brought its latest Marder Medium Tank RI (Republic of Indonesia) to Indo Defence 2016.
The Marder 1 infantry fighting vehicle (IFV) was in production for the German Army between 1971 and 1975 and the latest 1A5 IFV will remain in service for some years. The company has already sold surplus upgraded Marder 1A3 IFVs to Chile and Indonesia. The Medium Tank RI is essentially an upgraded Marder 1A3 platform fitted with an Italian Oto Melara (today Leonardo) HITFACT three person turret. The most significant improvement to the platform is the raised roof line to provide more internal volume, upgraded MTU diesel engine, which now develops 690hp, upgraded suspension for improved mobility, and a modular armour package.
The HITFACT turret is armed with a 105mm rifled gun fitted with a thermal sleeve, fume extractor, muzzle brake and muzzle reference system. A 7.62mm machine gun (MG) is mounted co-axial with the main armament and if required, a 7.62mm MG could be mounted on the roof. HITFACT is a well-proven turret and is already installed on the Centauro (8x8) mobile gun system currently deployed by Italy, Jordan and Spain. The turret is fitted with a computerised fire control system (FCS) coupled to stabilised commander’s and gunner’s sights, which both have day/thermal channels and a laser rangefinder.
The Marder Medium Tank RI would not engage other main battle tanks; its primary role is to support mounted and dismounted infantry using its 105mm gun, which can fire a wide range of ammunition natures.
Rheinmetall believes that its Marder 1 Medium Tank RI is a cost-effective solution for Indonesia, because vehicles could be delivered about two years after contract award and the Indonesian Army is already familiar with the basic Marder 1A3 platform.
The same upgraded platform used for the Marder 1 Medium Tank RI is also used for other applications and has been shown in the armoured personnel carrier (APC) configuration fitted with a Kongsberg remote weapon station (RWS) armed with a .50 M2 HB MG.

Two NC-212i aircraft ready to deliver (photo : Detik)
State-owned aircraft manufacturer PT Dirgantara Indonesia (DI) says it has completed the manufacturing of two NC212i aircraft ordered by the Philippines.
Equipped with ramp doors and a modern navigation and communication system, the multipurpose plane, which is the latest generation of NC212 and has a carrying capacity of 28 passengers, is the first Indonesian aircraft ordered by the Philippines. The Philippines has not upgraded its air force’s fleet its aircraft in the last 20 years.
PT DI commerce and restructuring director Budiman Saleh said the purchasing contract of the two NC212i aircraft, including their spare parts, was worth US$19 million.
“We can do it in affordable prices, and with no dependency to the US. You can also put Israeli technology inside,” Budiman said. He accompanied Raymundo de Vera Elefante, Undersecretary for Finance, Ammunitions, Installations and Materials of the Department of National Defense, and Philippine Air Force Chief of Air Staff Maj.Gen. Rozzano D Briguez during a visit to the company’s fixed wing airplane hangar in Bandung on Friday.
Budiman further said the delivery of the aircraft would be conducted after Philippine pilots received training about the instruments and technical conditions at PT DI.
“We will take it on time. Hopefully, it will arrive in the Philippines in the first semester [of next year]. Our pilots will receive training this December,” said Elefante.
According to PT DI, the NC212i aircraft can be used for producing artificial rain, maritime patrol and coast guard patrol. More than 600 units of its previous generation C212 series have been used by 38 countries, including Chile, Mexico, South Africa, Spain, Thailand, the Philippines and the United Arab Emirates.

ShinMaywa Industries is looking to progress a sale of the US-2 to Indonesia in 2017 (photo : wsj)
Japanese company ShinMaywa Industries is moving forward with its potential programme to provide its US-2 amphibious search-and-rescue (SAR) aircraft to Indonesia, industry officials have told IHS Jane's at the Indo Defence 2016 exhibition in Jakarta.
The programme features the initial supply of only three aircraft but has significance for Japan because it could represent the country's first major international defence sale since Tokyo lifted the country's long-standing ban on military exports in April 2014.TNI previously operated Grumman HU-16 Albatros amphibious aircraft (photo : TNI)
Masayuki Tanaka, the manager of ShinMaywa's amphibious aircraft export division, said on 3 November that although the US-2 is not equipped with any weapons or munitions, the aircraft is considered by the Japanese government as a defence product because it is operated by the Japan Self Defense Force. He added that ShinMaywa is hopeful that a contract to supply the aircraft to the Indonesian Armed Forces can be completed soon. "At a government level Japan and Indonesia are continuing to discuss the US-2 export programme and we hope an agreement can be reached in 2017."
Impetus in the US-2 sale to Indonesia was also provided by a defence collaboration deal signed by the two governments in March 2015 that outlines a commitment from both Indonesia and Japan to collaborate on military equipment and technologies. To that end, Tanaka said ShinMaywa is presently talking to Indonesian company PT Dirgantara about a collaboration programme centred on the US-2.
TNI previously also operated PBY-5A Catalina amphibious aircraft (photo : Wijanarko)
Tanaka added that, in addition to Indonesia, "several" Asian countries have expressed interest in acquiring the US-2. IHS Jane's understands that Thailand is considering the aircraft for its SAR requirements. Another major opportunity resides in India.
The Indian Navy is thought to have a requirement for 12 US-2 aircraft for an estimated USD1.6 billion. Japan and India have been engaged in talks about a potential sale of the aircraft for some time, although the Japanese Ministry of Defense (MoD) told IHS Jane's in October that negotiations had stalled due to Tokyo's requirement to receive greater clarity about the details of India's US-2i procurement policy.

SAGE is a digital sensor which will be used to detect and locate potentially threatening radar systems (photo : Leonardo)Leonardo-Finmeccanica’s SAGE Electronic Support Measures (ESM) system has now entered service on the Indonesian Air Force’s first modified CN-235 Maritime Patrol Aircraft (MPA). The modification programme was led by PT Dirgantara Indonesia (PTDI) and Integrated Surveillance and Defense (ISD) in the US. SAGE is a digital sensor for aircraft used for intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) missions. It can identify the location of Radio Frequency (RF) emitters such as surface-to-air missile fire-control radars from a single aircraft, enhancing situational awareness. The first CN-235 was modified during 2016, with SAGE being installed and integrated with the aircraft’s tactical mission system. Airborne flight testing then took place during the summer. Leonardo is working closely with ISD and PTDI to deliver this capability to the Indonesian Air Force and is looking forward to future business opportunities with the two companies. The Indonesian Air Force will be operating the SAGE system in the maritime environment, where a clear understanding of an adversary’s use of the electromagnetic spectrum is essential. SAGE provides this capability in a cost-effective and sophisticated digital package and will allow the IAF to detect and locate potentially threatening radar systems.SAGE is part of Leonardo’s electronic warfare product portfolio that includes individual sensors as well as fully integrated defensive aid suites. The company’s expertise in the domain allows it to offer a dedicated Electronic Warfare Operational Support (EWOS) facility, boosting the effectiveness of all EW products.
SAGE is readily exportable and is in use with the Republic of Korea as part of a package of electronic warfare equipment for the country’s Maritime Operational Helicopter (MOH) programme and will also enter service on the AW159 helicopter in Brazilian Navy service in 2017. In October 2016, SAGE was demonstrated on the Leonardo Helicopters SW4-Solo Optionally-Piloted helicopter and the Schiebel S-100 CamCopter UAS during the Royal Navy’s Unmanned Warrior exercise in the UK. SAGE is effective over a range of operating domains and platforms.

Soldiers from 1st Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment and Socomd tested the Mk 47 light-weight automatic grenade launcher (LWAGL), which also featured a light-weight video sight 2 (LVS-2).
Project Manager Major (Maj) Cameron Fraser described the technology as a “game changer” for Direct Fire Support Weapons platoons, artillery batteries, Special Forces and Air Force combat units.
“I can verify that the lethality and situational awareness of the LWAGL lives up to the hype,” he said.
CASG arranged the testing that also confirmed functionality, robustness and ease of use on the advanced fire control system.

“First round target impact was observed on multiple occasions because of the increased accuracy of the LWAGL system complete with the LVS-2,” Maj Fraser said.
“The resolution of the day/night sighting system provided via the LVS-2 enabled detection and recognition out to 3km.”
Trial participants verified the reduction in weight of the LWAGL versus the legacy weapon, dismounted load configurations to facilitate rapid assembly, firing and disassembly. They also started to develop procedures to optimise capability.
Army will roll out the launcher to infantry battalions and artillery regiments in 1, 3 and 7 Bdes, SASR, 2 Cdo Regt, Air Force Security Force squadrons, the School of Infantry and the School of Artillery from November this year through to June 2017.
