As preproduction work on the Royal Australian Navy's (RAN's) Hunter-class frigates continues to meet a demanding schedule, designer and shipbuilder BAE Systems Australia is already considering its next major role in the country's long-term Naval Shipbuilding Plan.

In June 2018 BAE Systems defeated Italian and Spanish contenders in a hard-fought AUD35 billion (USD24 billion) competition to provide Australia with nine next-generation anti-submarine warfare (ASW) frigates based on BAE Systems' Type 26 Global Combat Ship.

Six months later three significant agreements were signed with the Australian government: a contract for the Hunter-class build, the acquisition of ASC Shipbuilding (ASCS) from Canberra under a peppercorn arrangement, and a sovereign capability offer deed (SCOD) on collaborating in the establishment of a long-term sovereign capability in Australia.

Royal Thai Army Ordnance Department committee inspect Armoured Recovery Vehicle (ARV) variant of Chinese NORINCO VT4 main battle tanks at 6th Cavalry Battalion, 6th Cavalry Regiment in Khon Kaen, Thailand, 23 May 2019.

The basic car recovery vehicle with the base car VT4 is a repair vehicle that is part of the VT4 main battle tank supplied from NORINCO, the state-owned weapon manufacturer of the People's Republic of China. The Royal Thai Army has been given 28 cars in first phase and the second phase is 10 cars, a total of 38 cars and the Thai Army plans to add procure VT4 main battle tank. Phase 3 is another 14 cars a total of 52 vehicles, in which the total number of vehicles will include at least 2 VT4 ARV recovery vehicles.

The VT4 main battle tank has been stationed in two cavalry battalions. The tank is the 7th Khon Kaen Cavalry Battalion and the 21st Cavalry Battalion. Otto the 6th Cavalry Regiment. 3rd Cavalry Brigade in parallel with the plan to strengthen the cavalry forces in the 2nd Army Region area.

After the Thai Army received the 46th Oplot-T main tank from Ukraine, which included 2 Atlet recovery vehicles as part of the supply contract at the 2nd Cavalry Battalion. 2nd Infantry Division keeping him there. It is understood that for the VT4 main battle tank supply program, the Royal Thai Army still needs at least 100 main battle tanks. This tanks to replace the M41A3 light tank from US that has been in operation since the year 1962, which is in the process of decommissioning. Which is only in the unit of the direct division of the 3rd Cavalry Battalion, 9 Nakorn Ratchasima Cavalry Regiment 6 was awarded 34 M48A5 main battle tanks after the Oplot-T main battle tank has already received completed.

Including in the Army Region 3, the 7th Cavalry Battalion of 4th Infantry Brigade received a light tank Stingray, and the Army Region 4, the 18th Cavalry Battalion of 5th Infantry Brigade that has been awarded the M48A5 main battle tank to replace the light tank M41A3. Since delivery of the main battle tank VT4 has shown combat readiness in many exercises and plans to set up a maintenance center factory in Khon Kaen to support long-term use.

However, even if the user unit is satisfied with the performance of the car but there is a resounding sound that China is not sincere to transfer technology, systems or important equipment such as engines in depth to Thailand. Which seems to be a bargain that the Chinese will come to control the maintenance center in Thailand using their own people

Rudal jelajah anti kapal P-800 Onyx (Yakhont), mempunyai hulu ledak 300 kg, kecepatan 2.0 Mach dan versi Rusia mempunyai jarak jangkau 600 km (photo : Military Today)

Rudal Kalibr Rusia setara dengan rudal Tomahawk AS.

Konsep pesawat N219 amfibi (image : Kompas)

F-35 Kills Dozens of Enemy Fighters in Crazy Combat "Scenario"

F-35A flies during an aerial demonstrasion (photo : Reuters)

If pilots can complete the OODA loop more quickly than an enemy during an air-to-air combat engagement, described as “getting inside an enemy’s decision-making process,” they can destroy an enemy and prevail. Faster processing of information, empowering better pilot decisions, it naturally stands to reason, makes a big difference when it comes to the OODA loop.

As 60 enemy fighters closed in on a US Air Force 4th Generation fighter aircraft, blinding the jet with electronic warfare attacks, an experienced pilot faced unseen life threatening attackers closing in -- during an air-combat Red Flag exercise closely replicating actual warfare scenarios.

Yet, in a life-saving flash, the endangered 4th pilot was told to “turn around” by an F-35 operating in the vicinity who radioed an instant warning. The 5th-Gen, multi-role stealth fighter then used its long-range sensors and weapons to “kill” the enemy aircraft, according to an Air Force news report.

Air Force Col. Joshua Wood, 388th Operations Group Commander was part of the exercise.

“I’ve never seen anything like it before. My wingman was a brand new F-35A pilot, seven or eight flights out of training. He gets on the radio and tells an experienced, 3,000 hour pilot in a fourth-generation aircraft. ‘Hey bud, you need to turn around. You’re about to die, There’s a threat off your nose,’” Wood explained in the service report.

The Red Flag exercise, and annual live combat-like training event, drew from an unprecedented amount of advanced threat scenarios, representing "near peer" threats. Red Flag aggressors, according to the Air Force report, included “advanced integrated air-defense systems, an adversary Air Force, cyber-warfare and information operations.”

F-35A during training (photo : Fortune)

Red Flag pilots also flew in GPS-denied environments where communications were jammed or rendered inoperable by enemy EW attacks, according to the Air Force report. Taking place at Nellis AFB in Nevada, they exercise included 3,000 personnel from 39 units, including the US Navy, US Air Force, Royal Air Force and Royal Australian Air Force.

“The F-35 ‘redefines’ how you go to war with a platform. it fuses data at a very core level, providing pilots with information to be lethal in the battlespace,” Edward “Stevie” Smith, F-35 domestic business development director, Lockheed Martin, told Warrior Maven in an interview.

Developers explain that the F-35 is, by design, intended to draw upon its stealth configuration to “Suppress Enemy Air Defenses” while monitoring air-to-air and air-to-ground threats.

An engineer familiar with F-35 technology explained it this way - “There is a FLIR (Forward-Looking Infrared) built into the airplane. The DAS (Distributed Aperture System with 360-degree cameras) and the EOTS (Electro-Optical Targeting System to track and attack long range targets) can see things in midwave IR at pretty significant ranges, tracking them from a long way.”

Describing F-35 weapons engagements, Lockheed F-35 pilot Billie Flynn said F-35s could fire Advanced Medium Range Air-to-Air Missiles without being seen by adversaries - operating at the margins of detectability.

"We could launch and leave," Flynn explained.

F-35A during training (photo : Air Force Magazine)

At last year’s exercise, the Air Force and Navy explored a range of similar threats, including efforts to refine F-22 dogfighting skills. The F-22 at last year’s exercise, from the 27th Fighter Squadron, Langley Air Force Base, Virginia, performed air interdiction, combat search and rescue, close air support, dynamic targeting and defensive counter air operations in mock combat scenarios.

Confronting simulated “Red” force ground and air threats, F-22s attacked targets such as mock airfields, vehicle convoys, tanks, parked aircraft, bunkered defensive positions and missile sites.

Although modern weapons such as long-range air-to-air missiles, and the lack of near-peer warfare in recent years, means dogfighting itself is less likely these days. As the service prepares for future contingencies against technologically advanced adversaries, maintaining a need to dogfight is of great significance. For instance, the emerging Chinese J-10 and Russian 5th Gen PAK-50 clearly underscore the importance of this.

Advanced dogfighting ability can greatly expedite completion of the Air Force’s long-discussed OODA-loop phenomenon, wherein pilots seek to quickly complete a decision-making cycle - Observation, Orientation, Decision, Action – faster than an enemy fighter. The concept, dating back decades to former Air Force pilot and theorist John Boyd, has long informed fighter-pilot training and combat preparation.

Connectivity with air and ground combat assets, drawing upon emerging data-link technology, has been a key part of the exercise as the Air Force strengthens efforts to work with other services on cross-domain fires operations.

Electro-optical target system (EOTS) under the nose of an F-35 (photo : Wiki)

The OODA Loop is of equal importance to the F-35 which, while engineered to dogfight as well, is built to draw upon its long-range sensors to complete the process - before ever seen by an enemy.

The Air Force plans to actualize key aspects of this with, for instance, LINK 16 upgrades to the F-22 that enable it to improve data-sharing with the F-35 and 4th-generation aircraft in real-time in combat.

First operational in 2005, the F-22 is a multi-role fighter designed with stealth technology to evade enemy radar detection and speeds able to reach Mach 2 with what is called "super-cruise" capability. Supercruise is the ability to cruise at supersonic airspeeds such as 1.5 Mach without needing afterburner, a capability attributed to the engine thrust and aerodynamic configuration of the F-22.

The F-22 is built with two Pratt & Whitney F119-PW-100 turbofan engines with afterburners, Air Force statements said. The aircraft has a 44-foot wingspan and a maximum take-off weight of more than 83,000 pounds.

The launching ceremony of the multipurpose amphibious unit (LHD or Landing Helicopter Dock) “Trieste” took place today at the Fincantieri shipyard in Castellammare di Stabia, in the presence of the President of the Italian Republic Sergio Mattarella.

This multirole and multipurpose amphibious vessel has been designed since the beginning as a flexible, multi-purpose by design, modular unit with a low environmental impact. It is a Landing Helicopter Dock (LHD) capable of deploying aircraft and amphibious vehicles and equipment, relying on a flight deck and a floodable basin located on the stern of the ship.

The new unit will be delivered in 2022 and falls within the naval program of the maritime capability of Defence, approved by the Italian Government and Parliament and started in May 2015 (“Naval Law”).

The unit “Trieste” will be classified by RINA Services pursuant to international conventions for the prevention of pollution regarding traditional aspects – like those addressed by the MARPOL Convention, as well as those not yet mandatory, like the ones covered by the Hong Kong Convention introducing the “Green Passport” concept.

Vessel’s characteristics: LHD – Landing Helicopter Dock

The unit will be approx. 214 meters long with a maximum speed of 25 knots. It will be equipped with a COmbined Diesel eLectric Or Gas (CODLOG) propulsion system and an additional electric propulsion system to be used for low speed sailing, in line with the Italian Navy’s environmental policy (“Green Fleet”).

Thanks to her characteristics in terms of construction and weapon systems, the LHD “Trieste” will be able to project – in crisis areas – the landing force of the Italian Navy and support the Defence national capability projection from the sea, as well as to ensure the strategic transport of vehicles, personnel and equipment, and to support the Civil Protection in providing assistance to countries and populations in case of natural disasters, thanks to her capability to provide drinking water, power supply, healthcare and medical support.

The Unit has also been conceived to carry out command and control functions in case of emergencies at sea, evacuation of nationals and humanitarian assistance operations.

With over 1,000 sleeping accommodations, the new LHD will feature a 230-metre long helicopter flight deck, allowing the operation of a battalion consisting of 600 personnel, and a dock-garage for 1,200 linear metres of wheeled and tracked vehicles, both civilian and military.

The floodable dock – 50 metres long and 15 metres wide – will enable the ship to deploy the most technically advanced amphibious equipment and vehicles of EU and NATO Navies.

The different areas of cargo securing are accessible through cranes, stern and side ramps, and cargo handling will be managed by internal ramps and elevators. A fully equipped hospital will also be available onboard, complete with operating rooms, radiology and analysis rooms, a dentist’s office, and patient rooms capable of hosting 27 seriously injured patients (further admissions are possible through duly equipped container modules)

GUMI, South Korea — Hanwha Systems, the chosen supplier of the combat management systems (CMS) for the Philippine Navy’s upcoming frigates, opened up its facilities to Philippine media recently.

The CMS is considered the “brain” of warships, which integrates its weapons, communication and navigation, and sensors systems for naval combat.

Manila-based reporters were given a chance to have a quick look at the integrated combat management systems’ test site for BRP Antonio Luna (FF-151), the second missile-capable frigate which formally started its construction this week.

The selection of the CMS for the first purposely-built missile-capable frigates of the Philippine Navy attracted public attention last year.

Then Navy chief Vice Adm. Ronald Joseph Mercado was unceremoniously relieved from his post in late December 2017 for insisting on Tacticos Thales as CMS, as the system has been branded as a proven technology and capable of data integration with other modern navies.

Tacticos Thales is compatible with Tactical Data Link 16, a military data exchange network used by the navies of NATO, the United States, and other countries. Hanwha System’s Naval Shield compatibility with TDL 16 is still being developed.

Shipbuilder Hyundai Heavy Industries recommended two brands of CMS for the Philippine ships — Tacticos Thales and Hanwha Systems. While it first offered Tacticos Thales to the Philippine Navy, it later switched to Naval Shield of Hanwha Systems.

Critics of the HHI contract accused Malacañang of intervening in the selection of the CMS, the software-intensive system flexible enough to operate in a complex naval battle environment, prompting the Senate and the House of Representatives to investigate into the matter.

At a Senate hearing last year, Navy chief Vice Adm. Robert Empedrad said Hanwha Systems committed itself to developing the TDL 16 compatibility by 2019. But it appears that this will have to wait until next year.

Hanwha Systems senior manager of overseas business support team Sam Soo Kim told reporters on Wednesday that their standard comprehensive testing for TDL 16 with the US had been delayed to late 2020 due to change of requirements in transmission by the Korean armed forces.

According to Kim, it’s the US that conducts the final and official tests for the certification of TDL 16 compatibility.

But he said they had developed an exclusive tactical data link system called “Link P” for the two frigates of the Philippine Navy being built by HHI.

This can communicate with other similar tactical data link systems and has a 32-digit key code encryption to ensure data security.

“There is 32 digit key code for encrypting (‘Link P’) and we will give this freedom (to the PN) to change the key code. Normally the password has 10 digits. Hacking of this password takes millions of years. That’s the theory. Thirty-two digits is a very long password. Philippine Navy can randomly put in this system,” Kim said.

Empedrad said the TDL 16 compatibility for the Philippine frigates would require a different procurement activity for the government.

“TDL is not part of the contract. Wala naman nakalagay. It is provided with space but not (supplied) with. Pag binili yun, pwede agad isalpak,” he said.

The Chilean Navy is set to finalise the procurement of two Adelaide-class frigates by the end of May.

HMAS Melbourne and HMAS Newcastle , built in Australia in the early 1990s, would be acquired as a stop-gap measure to replace two of three Dutch- and British-built frigates currently in service in Chile.

Melbourne and Newcastle underwent an extensive upgrade during the last decade, being fitted with new combat management systems and anti-aircraft, anti-submarine warfare, and anti-surface vessel systems.

They can launch both RIM-66 Standard (SM-2MR) medium-range surface-to-air missiles and RIM-162 ESSM missiles for long- and medium-range air defence, as well as RGM-84 Harpoon anti-ship missiles.

Air Force OV-10s grounded following crash

MANILA -- All of the North American Rockwell OV-10 strike aircraft of the Philippine Air Force (PAF) have been grounded following the crash of one of the bombers while about to land at the Sangley Point Airport in Cavite last May 24.

"(Grounding of the remaining OV-10 aircraft is) part of our safety procedure, the aircraft will be grounded," said PAF spokesperson Major Aristides Galang on Monday.

Around five to six OV-10s are still being operated by the PAF.

If needed, the South Korean-made FA-50PH fighter aircraft and McDonnell Douglas MG-520 "Defender" attack helicopters can be deployed for missions.

"Depending on the type of missions, we can use the MG-520s or FA-50s if necessary," Galang said.

There is no order yet as to when the grounding order for the OV-10s would be lifted.

Last May 24, PAF OV-10 with tail number 402 and belonging to the 15th Strike Wing, crashed while turning crosswind for landing on runway 25 of Sangley Point Airport during the scheduled proficiency flight.

The two pilots safely ejected and were recovered by local fishermen in the area 2.5 kilometers from the shoreline of Rosario, Cavite.

The personnel were immediately picked-up by a civilian fishing boat and brought to Major Danilo Atienza Air Base Hospital.

"The investigation team was already activated to conduct a thorough investigation of the mishap," Galang said.

Boustead Feels The Heat

First Littoral Combat Ship at BHIC (photo : Malaysian Defence)

Jane’s reported that Boustead Heavy Industry Corp (BHIC) is feeling the heat from MINDEF’s ministry wide scrutiny exercise as reflected in its Q1 2019 financial results.

The Government has decided that all of the Keris-class Littoral Mission Ship (LMS) are to be build in China instead of the original plan to build two at Boustead Naval Shipyard’s facility in Malaysia. The move has resulted significant reduction to the LMS’ overall procurement cost.

The Maharajalela class Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) now faces delay as it had not received ‘equipment from the United States’ which pushed the ship’s service entry date to two years. To further add salt to the wound, the much anticipated contract signing of French-made Mica VLS surface to air missile system did not take place during the recent Langkawi International Maritime & Aerospace (LIMA) 2019 show last March. This was partly due to an unannounced quasi boycott on French made defence product following the country’s leading role on imposing ban on palm oil product from Malaysia and Indonesia.

Being a significant beneficiary of many defence deals related to France, the effect of so called Sawit War on the company is visible and real.

Last August 2018, MINDEF revealed that Boustead Naval Shipyard has been awarded with RM18 billion worth of contracts involving naval shipbuilding and repairs. A total of RM6. 7 billion was paid for the supply of 6 Kedah class New Generation Patrol Vessel (NGPV) delivered 4 years late than the early plan.

RM9. 1 billion was spent for the Maharajalela class LCS, also suffering from delays. The Minister of Defence also reported that the company was awarded with the Keris class LMS, valued back then at RM1. 17 billion.

Since 2000, the company has been awarded contracts to maintain Swedish made CB-90 combat boats worth RM1. 06 billion.

BHIC AeroServices which specialises in MRO service provider of Airbus Helicopters product has been tasked to maintain French-made helicopters operated by the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF), the Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) and Royal Malaysian Police (RMP). Having said that, many new maintenance contracts of these French made helicopters have been given to other companies.

The strong foothold of Italian Leonardo Helicopters have broke the long standing domination of AS332/EC-225 Super Puma helicopters in Malaysia. MHS Aviation, a subsidiary of BHIC is a significant operator of Super Puma helicopters in this country. More Government agencies have adopted the much more popular Leonardo AW139 helicopter family.

The rise of Russian Helicopters and recent endorsement by the Prime Minister also mean that French helicopters’ market share in Malaysia are declining fast.

No love lost for a company that was initially tasked to build 27 offshore patrol vessels (OPV) for the RMN. Rather than updating the OPV’s design blue print take could be developed into other variants, the decision was made to Go French and adopted Naval Group’s Gowind class corvette design.
