Army has test-fired its first Lockheed Martin AGM-114R Hellfire II ‘Romeo’ laser-guided air-to-ground missile from one of its Tiger armed reconnaissance helicopters at the Delamere Air Weapons Range in the Northern Territory.
The Hellfire II Romeo variant has some guidance and navigation improvements over its AGM-114M model, which is certified to be fired from Army’s fleet of Tiger ARHs.
The AGM-114R also features a variable warhead, which Lockheed Martin says is intended to work well against all three target types of armoured vehicles, fortified positions or soft and open targets, which can be selected by the aircrew while airborne without having to be preset prior to departure.
“Hellfire is extremely lethal, and we will continue to use it into the future with some upgrades that are coming through,” said Lieutenant Colonel Hayden Archibald, commanding officer of the 1st Aviation Regiment, 16th Aviation Brigade.
“We have just conducted tests and evaluations using the AGM-114R, which is a great enhancement to the Hellfire system. We will be able to program the warhead to be either an explosive fragment or an anti-tank weapon.”
The Hellfire II Romeo trial was carried out by the Army Aviation Test and Evaluation Section with support from Airbus Group Australia Pacific instrumentation, engineering and maintenance personnel, as well as the 1st Aviation Regiment, the Army Aviation Training Centre and RAAF Base Tindal.

Multi Role Support Ship (MRSS) yang diminati Malaysia (all photos : Defense Studies)
Malaysia Tertarik Kapal Perang Buatan PT PAL
Kami tunggu proses finalisasi desain dulu," jelas Firmansyah.

Gowind LCS TLDM PSIM (Panoramic Sensors and Intelligence Module)

The service technical centre (STC) for the maintenance and repair of Sukhoi aircraft at the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) Base at Gong Kedak, here can boost the national defence industry. (photo : Bernama)
GONG KEDAK: The Royal Malaysian Air Force today unveiled a new multi-million ringgit technical service centre aimed at providing a comprehensive maintenance for the country's foremost jet fighters, the Sukhoi Su-30MKM, at the Gong Kedak air base.
RMAF chief Gen Tan Sri Roslan Saad said the facility would serve as a 'second line for servicing' to complement the existing services provided by privateer ATSC Sdn Bhd at the base's 11th Squadron hangar.
He said the new facility was undertaken by Setiajaya Sdn Bhd from March 24, 2014 and completed yesterday (Dec 6). The centre will operate through collaboration with the Public Works Department.
"This new facility will be fully equipped with the necessary logistics, spares and equipment to provide a comprehensive and effective servicing and maintenance for the Sukhois.
"Before this, we were relying on the services provided by ATSC," he said after unveiling the new facility at the Gong Kedak air base.
On another note, Roslan revealed that the air traffic control radar at the Butterworth base would be upgraded for a year from January, to meet with the advancement of technology.
This, he said, followed a similar successful upgrade at the Gong Kedak air base by Jetro Sdn Bhd which equipped it with the ASR Meteor 087 type.
"We hope these developments will spur the local defence industries to play a greater role in maintaining the sovereignty of the country's defence and security," said Roslan.
The agreement for the purchase of the Su-30MKM jet fighters costing US$900 million (RM3.42 billion) was officially signed during Russian President Vladimir Putin’s visit to Malaysia in May 2003, with the first of 18 jets arriving in June 2007.
By Sept 2010, operations at the Gong Kedak base became an all-Malaysian affair, after the 50-odd Russian and Indian technical crew, engineering officers and instructor pilots ended their two-year service tenure.
Their departure posed a strong challenge to the local airmen and women to stand on their own and operate the Sukhoi SU-30MKM flanker multi-role combat aircraft.
The RMAF also utilised the services of 300-odd staff from ATSC Sdn to support a similar strength of its own crew to continue running the base.
While the Indians provided flight instructors, engineering officers, technical experts and administrative staff here, the Russians provided their test pilots and engineers to verify, certify and standardise the Flanker.
The base here is now Malaysia's foremost jet-fighter facility. It was established in 1993, with nearby Bukit Puteri housing an air defence tactical radar for the RMAF's 321st Squadron.
By 2009, the ground-based 402nd air defence squadron and 11th Sukhoi Squadron were established.
To date, there are more than 1,000 servicemen and civilians stationed at the base, which is divided into two entities that nestle in an area straddling Kelantan and Terengganu.

Pesawat tempur Sukhoi Su-35 (photo : Sputnik)
Jakarta - Menteri Pertahanan (Menhan) Ryamizard Ryacudu mengatakan Indonesia dan Rusia belum menyepakati harga pembelian pesawat tempur Sukhoi Su-35 buatan Rusia.
"Tunggu saja. Saya masih tawar," kata Menhan Ryamizard, Jakarta, Jumat (9/12).

12 Desember 2016EA-18G Electronic Warfare Range System (photo : USAF)
WASHINGTON - The State Department has made a determination approving a possible Foreign Military Sale to Australia for AEA-18G Electronic Warfare Range System and related support, equipment, and training. The estimated cost is $115 million. The Defense Security Cooperation Agency delivered the required certification notifying Congress of this possible sale on December 2, 2016.
The Government of Australia has requested additional funding to a previously implemented case for two Electronic Warfare Range Systems to conduct Electronic Warfare and Electronic Surveillance training within the borders of Australia. The original FMS case, valued at $79.07 million, includes non-MDE costs for all support elements required to provide for system integration testing, tools and test equipment, support equipment, spare and repair parts, publications, operations manuals, technical documents, personnel training, U.S. Government and contractor technical assistance, and other related elements of logistics and program support.
The addition of $35.93 million in non-MDE funding to the basic case will provide for unfunded requirements to meet the scope of the basic case and provide for the sale of additional classified technical data and software, system integration and testing, tools and test equipment, support equipment, spare and repair parts, publications, operations manuals, and technical documents, personnel training, U.S. Government and contractor technical assistance, and other related elements of engineering, logistics, and program management. This amendment will push the original case value above notification threshold and thus requires notification of the entire case. The total overall estimated value is $115 million.
This sale will contribute to the foreign policy and national security of the United States by helping to improve the security of a major contributor to political stability, security, and economic development in the Western Pacific. Australia is an important Major non-NATO Ally and partner that contributes significantly to peacekeeping and humanitarian operations around the world. It is vital to the U.S. national interest to assist our ally in developing and maintaining a strong and ready self-defense capability. By enabling Australian Defense Force (ADF) ranges, the U.S. Government will ensure consistency in training across platforms and theaters, whether the exercises are conducted in the United State or in Australia, where U.S. aircrews will be able to participate in training exercises alongside their Australian counterparts.
The proposed sale will allow continued efforts to improve Australia's capability in current and future coalition operations. Australia will use the range to enhance Electronic Warfare capabilities as a deterrent to regional threats and to strengthen its homeland defense. Australia will have no difficulty absorbing these items into its armed forces.
The proposed sale will not alter the basic military balance in the region.
The prime contractors will be Leidos (hardware) and General Dynamics Mission Systems (software). The U.S. Government is not aware of any known offsets associated with this sale.
Implementation of this sale will require ten (10) temporary U.S. Government or contractor representatives to Australia for assistance in integration and range operational and maintenance training.

Hobart class Air Warfare Destroyers (photo : AusAWD)
BAE Systems Australia has been awarded a five-year contract valued at $70 million to maintain the Hobart class Air Warfare Destroyers, the first of which is due to be delivered to the Royal Australian Navy next year.
This contract is creating about 50 jobs in Adelaide and Sydney to manage the delivery of support as the warships transition out of the build phase and into service.
“The appointment of BAE Systems Australia as the managing contractor for the initial sustainment of the Air Warfare Destroyers is great news for Australian industry,” said Minister for Defence Industry Christopher Pyne.
“It shows that not only can hardworking Australians build these complex warships but we can maintain them in house as well. This also represents yet another milestone for the Air Warfare Destroyer program as it simultaneously commences its transition from acquisition to sustainment while continuing to consolidate, fit-out and test the destroyers in Adelaide.”
As the managing contractor, BAE Systems will develop and manage the supporting industry supply chain to deliver the full range of sustainment services required. The company will also provide asset management and other services to ensure the DDGs are both mission capable and available.
“This is a new opportunity that allows us to develop from the ground up a leading-edge sustainment model for the entire service life of these new ships,” said BAE Systems Australia chief executive Glynn Phillips.
“This will add significant depth to our national maritime sustainment business, and it also helps contribute to a stronger and more sustainable Australian-based defence capability.”

AW149 of the Royal Thai Army (photo : Helihub)
HeliHub.com can exclusively announce that Leonardo appear to have made their first AW149 sale, with an aircraft for the Royal Thai Army now being test flown. Seen in Marco Bianchi’s photo here, which he has given us permission to use, the Thai military flash is seen on the tail of this otherwise anonymous aircraft. A large square sticker has been placed over the national roundel of Thailand. There is no information currently available on how many have been ordered.
In recent weeks, the Royal Thai Army has also taken delivery of six AW139s, with serial numbers 41520 through 41525 from the US AW139 production line. The first three of these were delivered in September, with the second batch of three following in October

MANILA (PNA) -- One out of the five TC-90 aircraft, earlier leased from Japan, will be arriving in the Philippines by the first quarter of 2017.
This was disclosed by Philippine Navy (PN) spokesperson Capt. Lued Lincuna who added that the aircraft may arrive either in February or March at the Sangley Point air facility in Cavite.
Last November, two PN pilots and six air crews left for Japan to start training on the above-mentioned aircraft.
The Department of National Defense (DND) earlier announced that the Philippines will be re-equipping the TC-90s as Japan have stripped of some its equipment, including its surveillance systems.
The country will pay Japan USD7,000 each for the first four aircraft yearly and only USD200 for the fifth, or total of USD28,200 as stipulated in its lease agreement.
It is renewable every year. The TC-90s will come from the stocks of the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force and it also useful for humanitarian assistance and disaster relief and maritime security.
The DND said that they are looking at the possibility of using for 20 years as it will proved very handy for the Philippines while its military is upgrading its equipment.
The TC-90, which is part of the Beechcraft King Air aircraft family, was offered by Japan shortly after the Agreement Concerning the Transfer of Defense Equipment and Technology was finalized last February 29.
The TC-90's patrol range is double those of small Philippine aircraft which only has a maximum range of 300 kilometers.
