SHAH ALAM: A decision will made soon on the company to provide the training helicopters for the Royal Malaysian Air Force under a Private Financing Initiative.

Under the programme, RMAF will receive a number of helicopters for basic and advanced rotary training to replace the Allouette III currently still in service at its training centre (Pulatibang 1) at the Kepala Batas, Alor Setar Kedah.

RMAF chief Jen Datuk Seri Roslan Saad said the decision was expected within the next “one month or so” for the programme. He declined to comment further. Roslan was speaking to the media after RMAF Excellence Service Awards today.

The helicopters under consideration are from the Airbus Helicopters stable namely the latest variants, of the EC120 and the EC135.

Malaysian Defence was informed that several companies had submitted the proposal under the PFI programme, apart from Aerotree Defence and Services Sdn Bhd, which currently leased two Super King Airs, to the RMAF for its multi-engine aircraft conversion training.

Industry sources told Malaysian Defence that the contract for the PFI may be signed at Lima 2015 in March.

Back in 2011, Aerotree signed a letter of intent with Airbus Helicopters to purchase three EC135 helicopters in a training and light utility role, along with options to buy more of these helicopters in the future.

Apart from RMAF future helo pilots, trainees from other services from the Army and Navy also undertake their basic rotary flying at Pulatibang 2.
